Aarey Protest: Mehbooba Mufti is under detention since August 5 (File)

New Delhi:
After the Supreme Court on Monday stopped the cutting of trees in Mumbai's Aarey Colony until October 21 following protests by environmentalists, detained Jammu and Kashmir politician Mehbooba Mufti used the development to highlight the situation in her state. "Aarey trees > Kashmiri lives," read a tweet from her account, which is operated by her daughter Iltija. While cheering Mumbai's green activists, she said the people of Jammu and Kashmir had been denied the right to "free speech and expression".
"Glad that activists were able to stop the felling of trees at Aarey. One wonders why the Kashmiris have been deprived of the very same right to free speech and expression. GOI (Government of India) claims they are now at par with other Indians but the truth is they've been stripped of even fundamental rights," said the former chief minister's tweet.

Ms Mufti has been under detention since August 5, when the centre announced its two massive decisions-- to revoke special status to Jammu and Kashmir and to split the state into two union territories.
Before announcing its move, the centre had rushed in thousands of paramilitary into the state and placed restrictions on large gatherings. It also blocked telecom lines and either arrested or detained hundreds of political leaders as precautionary measures.
The BJP has taken exception to her tweet.
"While she is entitled to have a point of view, she has made a rather unfortunate comparison to say that the Supreme Court is not concerned with issues, and that too with Jammu and Kashmir. The Supreme Court has heard matters, in fact, ironically, her own daughter went to the Supreme Court and was allowed to meet with her family members and to meet with her mother," BJP leader Nalin Kohli said.
"This appears to be the mindset of such people, who will speak for the Supreme Court as if it's the best institution when they get judgements or orders in their favour, but when they want to do politics, they will even drag the top court and make it a target," he added.
The cutting of trees in Aarey Colony to make space for a car shed has become a massive issue in poll-bound Maharashtra, with thousands of Mumbaikars hitting streets to protest against the decision. 29 activists were arrested on Friday, when authorities began cutting trees following the Bombay High Court's refusal to intervene in the matter.

India Gets First Chunk Of Data On Swiss Bank Account Holders
Swiss Bank news: This is the first time that India has received details from Switzerland under AEOI

New Delhi/Berne: India has got first chunk of Swiss bank account details of its nationals under a new automatic information exchange pact, a major milestone in the government's fight against black money stashed abroad.
India is among 75 countries with which Switzerland's Federal Tax Administration (FTA) has exchanged information on financial accounts within the framework of global standards on Automatic Exchange of Information (AEOI), an FTA spokesperson told PTI.
The next exchange would take place in September 2020, the spokesperson added.
This is the first time that India has received details from Swiss authorities under the AEOI framework, which provides for exchange of information on financial accounts, currently active as well as those accounts that were closed during 2018, the year in which the framework agreement became effective.
However, the information exchange is governed by strict confidentiality clauses, and the FTA officials refused to disclose specific details on the number of accounts or about the quantum of financial assets associated with the Indian clients of Swiss banks.
However, the AEOI only relates to accounts that are officially in the name of Indians and they might include those used for business and other genuine purposes.
Overall, the FTA has sent information on around 3.1 million financial accounts to the partner states and received information on around 2.4 million from them.
The exchanged details include identification, account and financial information. These include name, address, state of residence and tax identification number, as well information concerning the financial institution, account balance and capital income.
Separately, the Swiss government said in a statement that the number of countries with which the AEOI has taken place this year is 75, out of which there was reciprocity with 63 countries.
In the case of 12 countries, Switzerland received information but did not provide any, either because those countries do not yet meet the international requirements on confidentiality and data security (Belize, Bulgaria, Costa Rica, Curacao, Montserrat, Romania, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Cyprus) or because they chose not to receive data (Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands).
The data was collected by the FTA from around 7,500 institutions including banks, trusts and insurers.
"The largest exchange was with Germany, as was the case in the previous year. The FTA cannot provide any information on the amount of financial assets," the statement added.
Asked about specific details relating to India, the FTA spokesperson said, "the communication of statistical data is subject to the confidentiality clauses as well."
To another query on the next exchange of information with India, the spokesperson said,"according to the international agreement in place, the exchanges have to take place within nine months after the end of the respective calendar year. This means the exchange takes place in September, except for corrections."

'Shastra Puja' In Paris, Sortie For Rajnath Singh During Rafale Handover
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will leave for France on a three-day visit today.

New Delhi:
Hours before leaving for France to receive the first of 36 long-awaited Rafale fighter jets on behalf of the Indian Air Force, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh today tweeted that he was looking forward to taking India-France ties to a whole new level during his visit.
"Leaving New Delhi for Paris on a three-day visit to France. Shall attend the Annual Defence Dialogue and the Induction Ceremony of Rafale. India-France bilateral relations have made tremendous progress in recent years. Looking forward to further and deepen these ties," he tweeted.
The Union Minister will meet French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday, before proceeding to Bordeaux to participate in the Rafale fighter jet handing-over ceremony at Merignac along with French Minister of Armed Forces Florence Parly.
The same day, he will perform "Shastra Puja" - a ritual that involves the worship of weapons - to mark the auspicious occasion of Vijayadashami and undertake a sortie on a Rafale fighter jet. "As per plans, a French pilot will fly in the front cockpit while Singh sits in the rear cockpit. The first Indian Rafale fighter jet with tail number RB-01 will be used for the sortie," news agency ANI quoted sources in the IAF as saying.
RB stands for newly appointed IAF chief Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhaduria, in recognition of his role in striking the Rs. 60,000-crore Rafale deal in 2016.
Other highlights in the Defence Minister's itinerary include the annual defence dialogue with the French Minister of Armed Forces and a meeting with heads of the French defence industry on Wednesday.
In September 2016, India had signed an inter-governmental agreement with France for the procurement of 36 Rafale fighter jets at a cost of Rs. 59,000 crore. The IAF has already trained pilots and set up the required infrastructure in preparation for their arrival. However, while the first jet will be handed over to India on Tuesday, the first batch of four aircraft will come only by May next year.
Sources said the first squadron of the aircraft will be deployed at the Ambala air force station, located at a distance of just 220 km from the India-Pakistan border.
